What a weird and boring album. I’m thinking I may have been half listening to Shiina Ringo’s third album Lime, Semen, Chestnut Flower (interesting album title…). I don’t remember it being this bizarrely forgettable. The only track to come even remotely close to standing out to me was Stem and it still fell short. Ringo is mildly intriguing to me, and she does have some really amazingly creative songs, but her level of experimentation just goes over my head. She is one of those artists that I feel like I should regard in the way that I regard Utada or even Ayumi Hamasaki, yet I just can’t find the fuck to give. Sometimes I think I added her to my list to torture myself, because I don’t care for her albums as a whole at all. I didn’t mind her debut too much, it was pretty decent, but her second venture played much like this one. I just spent the entire hearing of this album wondering what the fuck I was listening to. Awful. This is a step down from her second album, astonishingly so and at the moment my least favorite album from her.

Lawsuit Winning Strip is Shiina Ringo’s sophomore album and it’s a really weird and jarring listen. I’m going to be honest, I didn’t like this album at all. The songs were interesting, I’ll give it that but Shiina’s voice is just too much and not in a good way. I had a hard time getting through this album in I don’t remember it being this cringey the first time around. The only bearable songs were Orthopedic Cast, Instinct and Dependence. The rest were just a bit under bearable. I don’t know where Shiina was trying to go with this album, I know that her voice is of an acquired taste, but my ears were tortured trying to get through this album for this review. I had to listen to a few songs more than once, most notably Identity just to make sure I actually was partial to them. So far this is my least favorite album from her. A huge step down from her debut.

Shiina Ringo is quite possibly the only artist I have on my list whose voice is such an acquired taste that even I have a hard time getting through most of her songs. I like her, but her voice definitely takes some getting use to. Moratorium of Innocence is her debut album and it’s interesting to say the least. I’d say I’m half and half with this album. It’s not bad or even boring, but it’s not one of those albums I can listen to just to listen to. Shiina’s voice is incredibly jarring, like nails on a chalkboard jarring. So, even good songs like The Right City or Morphine can be a little taxing to get through. However, her voice is surprisingly smooth in her more ballad oriented songs, such as The Same Night.
