I always come out of a listening to a Misia album wondering if I liked it or not. Misia has a really incredible an unique voice in I love how versatile her music is; she hasn’t changed up. Misia has the same style now that she did when she first debuted and I love that, because it’s her. However, sometimes it makes for a draining listen as you know that the song is good but it doesn’t really pop out at you or stick. LOVE IS THE MESSAGE is her sophomore album, an though a little better than her debut (in my opinion), it suffers from the same thing Mother, Father, Brother, Sister did. Good songs that once they end, you’re struggling to remember them. Of course tracks like BELIEVE and One! are memorable, because they aren’t slow-paced or ballad oriented like the others. Which is another thing I noticed with Misia, she will have a couple up-tempo, maybe mid-tempo tracks and the rest are ballads or slow-songs. I’m not mad at that, yet it does make for a tepid listen. The only track that really stands out is it’s just love, possibly my favorite Misia song. The rest are OK in well sung, with tracks like Sweetness and My Beloved standing out from the rest. It’s not a bad album by any means, but I’m always undecided when it comes to her albums.

I always find that with a lot of my favorite artists I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to their debut albums. One day I’ll listen to one and not really like it, then another day I will come back, listen to it again and find that it’s a bit better. I’m feeling the former with Misia’s debut album Mother Father Brother Sister. It’s passable ’cause Misia has a great voice, but on the other hand it doesn’t stand out as much as some of her later albums. I find myself half and half when it comes to Misia and her music. There are albums from her I love and some I think are just OK. Shockingly (considering this is Misia and she always has at least one stand out) no song on this album really stood out to me. A decent debut, but sub-par compared to what I know Misia can really offer.
