Before I heard YES Mika Nakashima’s third album MUSIC was my favorite album from her (or maybe I’m confusing this with LOVE…). Her first album was decent, but a bit too generic to be a Mika album. LOVE brought things back on track, and MUSIC solidified it. I really liked this jazzy, moody style from her. Mika’s voice is of an acquired taste, because it’s very raspy so it can turn you off, but despite that she still manages to deliver very surprisingly good vocal performances. And when I say that I’m talking specifically about her ballads, which to me are severely under rated. The album started off pretty strong with When The Cherry Blossom Colours Dance and Misty Moon-lit Night~Prayer, then it just kinda fell off only coming back up for air with Shadows of you and FAKE, I believe. Mika like Miliyah has some really nice album only tracks, but this time around they were pretty weak. They weren’t bad by any means just didn’t stand out like the ones on her second album. I’m not saying this is a step down, but I do think I prefer LOVE over this album, especially when it comes to replay value. I could put this on and play it, but aside from those tracks I mentioned, the rest are a little bit forgettable and just fill up space.

I absolutely love how Mika Nakashima did a complete 180 from her debut album. LØVE, her sophomore album sounds so completely different from TRUE that it’s almost as if you’re listening to a different artist. As where her debut sounded oddly generic an plain, this one is much more polished and sure of itself. Mika’s voice is very pleasant, especially on tracks like Snow Flower, You send me love and LAST WALTZ (Mika’s vocals on this album is a far cry from the sad rasp of her later albums). Every song just pops out at you in the most glorious way, and the sweet jazz of the arrangements are such a treat to the ears. I also really like her cover of I Love You, which is one of my favorite Japanese songs. All in all this was a really good album. I’m almost tempted to say my favorite, but Mika is one of those artists whose albums I always find myself enjoyingso the jury is out right now, but it’s most probably either this album or YES.

thoughts. C.
TRUE is Mika Nakashima’s debut album and I can’t really say whether I have a love, hate relationship with her. Mika is one of those rare artists that doesn’t have an album I hate and or dislike. I always find that I like her albums even if some are more memorable than others. If there is an album from her that I may not like it would probably be a split between this album and her NANA album THE END. Whenever I listen to TRUE I either come off disliking it or being indifferent towards it. TRUE always seemed real generic compared to her later albums. I don’t mean generic in a dated way, but in a this just doesn’t sound like her kind of way. I’m glad Mika found her niche with her second album and so on. I honestly don’t think I would like her as much or even continued to keep up with her music if her sound hadn’t evolved and become more polished. This is a decent debut; her voice is shaky but a lot more controlled compared to later albums (where she sounds severely hoarse). She also strains a lot with certain notes. It’s not my favorite, but I think I can appreciate it more now then I did when I first got into her.
