Despite the sheer number of tracks on Megumi Hayashibara’s sophomore album WHATEVER, it’s a pretty average listen. I don’t mean average in a bad way, because the album is decent. It’s just a passable album to me. Megumi’s voice is pleasant and each song has it’s own unique seiyuu-ish charm to it; they just don’t stand out much. Honestly, the only fair rating song that stood out to me was Tokyo Boogie Shoes. The only track that stands out to me and really shines is Seaside Diary. It’s quite gorgeous an really sucks you in, despite being very plainthe chorus just grabs you. I wasn’t expecting to like this track as much as I do. The only other two tracks that really caught my attention aside from that one is the ballad Still Waiting and Rainbow Colored Sneaker. It’s a fine sophomore album, despite most of the songs being merely OK to me.

I am still so surprised at how much I enjoy Megumi Hayashibara’s music because when I first got into her (even though I did like her voice despite it being kinda on the average side) I really thought I would get bored with her. Half and, Half is her debut album and I won’t lie, I use to think this album was so boring and forgettable. Megumi’s voice didn’t stand out to me and none of the songs stuck, not even one or two. Now, I think I can appreciate it more. It’s pretty generic, but a good kind of generic and it doesn’t sound aged too much like most albums that were released in the 90’s. A lot of the songs are pretty safe and filler-sounding, but a handful are pretty good. It’s not my favorite, but it is one of those debut albums that I’m partial to.
