BoA’s third and quite possibly my favorite Japanese album from her is LOVE & HONESTY. I tend to find myself flip flopping when it comes to her Korean and Japanese music, but I’ve always liked this album. As to where her previous two albums seemed very average, bland and almost generic in a way, this one seems to stand out in such an unassuming way. It’s not a great album… BoA doesn’t really have one particular sound she sticks to, even if I mostly see her as a mixture of pop and occasionally rnb. The album starts off pretty strong with Rock With You, followed by the addicting and fun Shine We Are! then it simmers down to the OK but kinda boring SOME DAY ONE DAY feat. VERBAL. LOVE & HONESTY brings everything back on track, a really sparkly, dream like sound that I loved. We then get a bunch of nice concert-sounding tracks: Be the one, EXPECT and Easy To Be Hard standing out. Song With No Name -Kimi no Uta- ending things on a nice, somewhat sad and melancholy note. It’s a step up from her previous two albums, for sure, but I feel like she could have brought it a bit harder. I always feel like BoA is playing it safe. This is my favorite Japanese album by her though.

I’ve never really liked BoA’s third Korean Album Atlantis Princess. There was a time when I think the only track I really liked was the title track, a really nice, terribly under-rated tune from her. The thing with BoA is, I think her earlier K-music is just under-rated period. I always find myself switching up, one second I like her Korean music more and the next I like her Japanese music more. Anywho, I’ve never really liked her third Korean album and I think I can safely say this is my least favorite of her K albums. It just gives off, or better yet screams forgettable. The songs I do like are pretty good though: Time To Begin makes me thing of Rock With You, Atlantis Princess is a really gorgeous song, Tree and Gift are two really nice under-rated ballads from her. Milky Way has always been one of my favorites and I like the fresh pop-ness of Beat Of Angel, even though it sounds like it should have been on NO. 1. The Lights of Seoul is OK, but kinda boring. It’s a huge step back from her second Korean album for sure, but it definitely has some gems on it.

I have never really been a fan of BoA’s second Japanese album VALENTI. It just always came across as very forgettable and strangely generic to me. LISTEN TO MY HEART has a lot more stand out tracks, and even a song as generic as POWER has it’s charm. The only song that stood out to me on this album was Jewel Song. I always find that with Japan at least, I always hate what they love. VALENTI was a huge hit when it came out, but every time I listen to it I always feel meh about it. I’m not saying it’s a bad song, it just doesn’t do anything for me. I use to dislike LISTEN TO MY HEART, but eventually the song grew on me, as well as the album. That’s not the case with VALENTI. The songs are decent, but they’re very blah to me. I wouldn’t just listen to a song just to listen to it, it would have to like pop up on my music player or something. BoA’s vocals are nice and this album is loads better than her IDENTITY album. It’s an OK sophomore effort from her; like I said the songs aren’t bad, they’re pretty decent, just mediocre and safe.

I really do love BoA’s second Korean album, NO. 1. I thought it would eventually fade after repeated listens, or I’d change my mind as I got older; it hasn’t. I always find myself amazed at how good the songs on this album are, to the point that I think it’s my favorite Korean album from her. I didn’t too much care for NO. 1, the title track, as it’s almost childish compared to the other tracks on here. There’s a quiet mature whimsy to this album that I like. BoA’s vocals could have been a bit better, but they were good enough (the rap on Shy Love is surprisingly good). I feel like all the songs aside from NO. 1 are under-rated on this album, which is a real shame, because the replay value is very high. I could listen to this without skipping a track. I wish she would tour and sing Sweetie, Waiting, Tragic and Power Of Love live (shoot, the whole album).

I have a love/hate relationship with BoA’s debut Japanese album LISTEN TO MY HEART. I’ve listened to it a number of times and I either find it forgettable or I like it in some vague way. I also go back and forth with LISTEN TO MY HEART and Every Heart and always end up coming to the conclusion that I like them both but I like Every Heart more (despite how everyone said it was over-rated back in the day). LISTEN TO MY HEART is pretty clean cut and stands out a bit more than ID; Peace B (though it is pretty forgettable in a way). As with ID; Peace B it blurs the lines between safe and mature pretty fluidly and I like that. It’s not her best Japanese album (I like LOVE & HONESTY and MADE IN TWENTY (20), but it’s a good start to her Japanese music career. I also like her version of The Meaning of Peace a lot more than Kuu’s.

I actually like BoA’s first Korean album ID; Peace B, which is cool ’cause I hardly ever like debuts or first volumes in the case of Korea. It’s not an impressive or stand-out album, plus it’s pretty bland and somewhat forgettable especially compared to her second Korean album: No. 1. I just like the cute and innocent air of it. If I remember correctly BoA debuted when she was 13, however there is a layer of maturity to this album that balances out the safe-ness of it. Also, it came out in 2000 I believe and doesn’t really sound all that dated like Koda Kumi’s first album affection does. BoA has a nice voice; it’s nothing special, but when she puts effort into her vocals they’re rather nice and unique. As I’ve stated before it’s a pretty safe debut, though one of the better one’s.
