I came out of Chihiro Onitsuka’s first album thinking it was boring, but had some really good tracks on it. I feel the same way about her sophomore album This Armor, it’s pretty on the boring side but has some really good tracks. Not as many as Insomnia, but enough. However, the only track that really stands out is infection, for obvious reasons. I thought Chihiro’s voice was nice, with her usual depressed air that I really related to when I first got into her. I just wish this album would have popped more; the songs been a bit more memorable. They’re good when you’re listening to them, but when they end the feeling ends as well. The only tracks other than infection that I come back to this album to listen to are Everything, In My Hands, Our Song and to some extent Rollin’. A decent album, but could have been better.

I hate how under-rated Chara is because she really has some good albums. I think the main reason why people are so put off by Chara is because her voice is one of those acquired taste voices that takes a little while to get use to, because it took me a little minute to get use to her voice. I love it. SOUL KISS is her second album and I think it’s safe to say that it’s a step up from her debut. There are a lot more stand out tracks on this, and her voice was surprisingly pleasant. As to where a couple of the tracks on her debut where a little grating, no track on this album was. I love how Chara plays around with her sound, so no one song sounds the same. I thought it started out strong, then tapered off toward the end. It’s still a solid album from Chara. I really think she is one of those rare artists that doesn’t have an album I really dislike.

I will give Bonnie Pink’s third album Evil & Flowers points for being a step up from her previous album… for the most part. It starts off a bit slow, but comes into it’s own after Your Butterfly. Still a little dull though, as the only tracks that have any real replay value to me are: He, Eve’s Apple and Quiet Life. I’m not saying the other tracks aren’t good in their own way, they just don’t really stick to me like those three and I wouldn’t pull this album up and play them. Evil & Flowers has a thoughtfulness that was very present in her earlier albums which is what got me interested in her in the first place, because her sound was moody, but in a simple and pleasant way. That’s the best way to describe this album; it’s easy on the ears, yet bland.

I have never really been a fan of BoA’s second Japanese album VALENTI. It just always came across as very forgettable and strangely generic to me. LISTEN TO MY HEART has a lot more stand out tracks, and even a song as generic as POWER has it’s charm. The only song that stood out to me on this album was Jewel Song. I always find that with Japan at least, I always hate what they love. VALENTI was a huge hit when it came out, but every time I listen to it I always feel meh about it. I’m not saying it’s a bad song, it just doesn’t do anything for me. I use to dislike LISTEN TO MY HEART, but eventually the song grew on me, as well as the album. That’s not the case with VALENTI. The songs are decent, but they’re very blah to me. I wouldn’t just listen to a song just to listen to it, it would have to like pop up on my music player or something. BoA’s vocals are nice and this album is loads better than her IDENTITY album. It’s an OK sophomore effort from her; like I said the songs aren’t bad, they’re pretty decent, just mediocre and safe.
